Establishment and Foundation
Alpha Phi Omega was founded on December 16, 1925, at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, USA, by Frank Reed Horton and twelve fellow undergraduates. Inspired by the principles of the Boy Scouts, they envisioned a service-oriented fraternity built on Leadership, Friendship, and Service, dedicated to fostering personal growth and community betterment.
Growth and Expansion
Alpha Phi Omega (ΑΦΩ), commonly known as APO, was introduced to the Philippines by Solomon Levy, a professional scouter, and organized by Dr. Librado I. Ureta, an Eagle Scout. The first chapter outside the United States, known as Alpha Chapter, was established at Far Eastern University in Manila on March 2, 1950, in Room 214 of the Nicanor Reyes Hall.
Incorporation
In 1976, Alpha Phi Omega Philippines was formally incorporated as a national organization under Philippine law, uniting chapters and alumni associations across the country. This milestone strengthened its legal identity, organizational structure, and capacity to promote Leadership, Friendship, and Service, ensuring the fraternity and sorority’s growth, stability, and nationwide recognition.
Founded in 1925, Alpha Phi Omega quickly grew into a significant organization, extending its reach beyond the United States. The first chapter established overseas was in the Philippines, marking the start of its global presence.
Alpha Phi Omega (ΑΦΩ), or APO, was introduced to the Philippines after World War II by Solomon Levy, an APO alumnus from the United States and a professional scouter. Drawing from the fraternity’s principles rooted in the Boy Scouts of America, Levy promoted the vision of a Scouting-based service fraternity. This vision was embraced by Dr. Librado I. Ureta, an Eagle Scout and graduate student at Far Eastern University (FEU), who organized the first chapter with the support of fellow Eagle Scouts.
On March 2, 1950, the first APO chapter outside the United States was established in Room 214 of Nicanor Reyes Hall at FEU, Manila. Known as the Alpha Chapter—now Alpha Phi Omega of Far Eastern University—the organization grew rapidly. By 1953, it had become a national fraternity with seven chartered chapters in Manila and the Visayas. In 1965, the Alpha Phi Omega Philippines National Board of Sorority was formed to unify and support sister sororities of fraternity chapters, further broadening its reach.
Today, APO Philippines stands as one of the nation’s largest campus-based organizations.
