Our members are graduates and alumni from various APO collegiate chapters, united by our shared commitment to uphold the ideals set forth since APO’s founding in 1925 and its establishment in the Philippines in 1950.
Sorsogon has established itself as one of the prominent hubs for Alpha Phi Omega (APO) members from various chapters across the Bicol region and beyond. Over the years, the fraternity has significantly expanded its presence in the province, resulting in the creation of a robust alumni network that is firmly committed to upholding the principles of APO.
Sorsogon Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association (SAPOAA) traces its roots to May 1984, when a group of dedicated brothers and sisters convened at Rizal Beach Resort, Gubat, Sorsogon. This conference, led by former Vice Governor, Bro. Antonio “Kruni” H. Escudero, marked the beginning of what would later become SAPOAA.
During this gathering, an emergency election was held, resulting in the appointment of Bro. Hermes Labitag of Eta Alpha as the association’s first president. Under his leadership, SAPOAA upheld the vision and principles of Alpha Phi Omega, carrying out service-oriented initiatives and promoting unity among alumni members.
However, in 1987, after Typhoon Sisang struck the province, the organization encountered challenges that resulted in a three-year dormancy. Despite this setback, SAPOAA re-emerged stronger, electing its second and third sets of officers in the following years.
The association steadily regained its momentum when a significant turning point came during a General Assembly held on May 22, 1994 at the residence of spouses Bro. Cyril and Sis. Elsa Meneses in Barangay Piot, Sorsogon City. It was at this pivotal meeting that SAPOAA elected its fourth set of officers and, for the first time, formally adopted its Constitution and By-Laws.
The officers elected were:
Area Coordinator Bro. Norberto D. Laguna took the initiative to organize a workshop, bringing members together to actively formulate a comprehensive two-year developmental plan. This milestone provided a solid foundation for SAPOAA’s governance, ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of its activities.
Due to the dedicated efforts of its officers in preparing the necessary documents and requirements, SAPOAA was officially recognized by the National Executive Board on July 15, 1995, at Vista Al Mayon, Legazpi City, as the 54th APO Alumni Association. This recognition, granted under the leadership of National President Jeoprey Pungutan, led members to refer to it as SAPOAA 54.
During the recognition process, Bro. Norbie Laguna, Bro. Ernesto Paladin, and Sis. Allen B. Deniega respectfully presented themselves before the National Executive Board to formally submit and defend their petition for recognition. Their efforts were graciously supported by Bro. John Arevalo (Gamma Xi ’85), who generously sponsored their hotel accommodations and provided financial assistance.

Following SAPOAA’s recognition, the association became active in various community service projects and organizational revivals.
SAPOAA has been instrumental in upholding unity and camaraderie among Alpha Phi Omega members in Sorsogon. From its humble beginnings to its formal recognition and continued growth, the association remains dedicated to advancing the fraternity’s mission and values.
Through the initiative of Bro. Amancio Pedro Villamor and with the assistance of Bro. Hermes Herrera, SAPOAA successfully secured its registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 1, 2020. This milestone led to the official recognition of the organization as a legal juridical entity, culminating in the issuance of its Certificate of Incorporation on November 9, 2020.

With its registration as a non-stock, non-profit corporation, SAPOAA underwent a significant structural shift, moving from a centralized leadership model under the president to a governance system led by a Board of Trustees.
This transition empowered the board to establish policies, enact regulations, and make crucial decisions for the association. As a result, the president’s role evolved into that of an executive officer, responsible for carrying out the board’s directives and managing the organization’s daily operations.
The recognition solidified SAPOAA’s legal identity, empowering the organization to expand its reach, enhance its initiatives, and further its commitment to promoting leadership, strengthening bonds of friendship, and upholding a lifetime dedication to service.
We serve through nation-building, campus improvement, community growth, and fraternity unity, fostering leadership, service, and lasting positive change.
